Homocystein, a
toxic amino acid, is being increasingly pointed to as
the "bad boy" of both Alzheimer's and cardiovascular
problems. Elevated levels of homocystein in the blood not
only predict oncoming Alzheimer's disease, but may very well
be a causative factor. The Good News is that homocystein
levels can be easily lowered by changes in diet and by taking
certain dietary supplements, especially in the B-vitamin
group.
Insulin and
Diabetes The link between
low insulin levels and diabetes on the one hand and Alzheimer's
disease on the other has long been suspected. Recent research is
confirming this, pointing out, among other things, that people with
diabetes have a 65% higher chance of contracting Alzheimer's
disease. There is speculation that there may be a third
separate type of diabetes that leads directly to
Alzheimer's.
