For the first time, an experimental drug has been successful in reducing two types of brain lesions present en Alzheimer's disease. The tests demonstrated that the compound AF267B slowed and reversed the formations of both beta-amyloidal plaques and the presence of fiber tangles of the tau protein in the brains oflaboratory mice. These types of brain lesions are common in people with Alzheimer's disease.

Homocystein, a toxic amino acid, is being increasingly pointed to as the "bad boy" of both Alzheimer's and cardiovascular problems. Elevated levels of homocystein in the blood not only predict oncoming Alzheimer's disease, but may very well be a causative factor. The link between low insulin levels and diabetes on the one hand and Alzheimer's disease on the other has long been suspected. Recent research is confirming this, pointing out, among other things, that people with diabetes have a 65% higher chance of contracting Alzheimer's disease. There is speculation that there may be a third separate type of diabetes that leads directly to Alzheimer's.

Recent research has shown a benefit of certain nutrients in reducing the risk of degenerative diseases of the brain. Antioxidants, such as vitamins E, C, B12 and folic acid have been shown to play an important role in healthy brain functioning. Antioxidants, often found in fruits and vegetables, have also been associated with improved mental function, including memory.
